The main thesis of the present work is that theological reading of the prophets means reading them in such a way that history is properly appreciated, on the terms of its own biblical presentation. These terms I call canonical. Since the late eighteenth century, a different species of history has emerged, and in the prophets this has meant placing them in a new order, beginning with Amos and ending with Joel or Jonah, and also subdividing the Major Prophets so as to fit within this scheme.
